Rowland Hill Nursery School & Children's Centre

Reading, Mark Making and Writing

Developing children's early reading skills is a continuing focus at Rowland Hill Nursery School.

The Talk for Writing Programme, Helicopter Story, Parent/Child lending library, sequence of high quality core texts throughout the year and Rowland Hill Museum and information books/ IT and the use of Talking Tubs and Floor Books, visits to local bookshops and libraries and storytelling focus activities all support early reading and writing skills.

Mark making supports children to represent their ideas graphically. When children realise that marks can be used symbolically to carry meaning they begin to use marks as tools to make their learning visible.
